Oakland Art Murmur: December First Friday

Oakland Art Murmur: First Friday Art Walk, December 5th

Oakland, CA – December 4, 2014 – Oakland Art Murmur’s galleries will collectively open their doors for their free monthly First Friday Art Walk on December 5th, rain or shine.

Since 2006, the Oakland Art Murmur community of art galleries has hosted an art walk every First Friday, known as The Art Murmur, when member galleries and mixed-use venues are collectively open to the public from 6pm to 9pm. The center of attraction is often in the Uptown-KONO district, typically alongside Oakland First Fridays’ Telegraph Avenue street festival. However, Art Murmur galleries will be open throughout the City of Oakland, despite the announcement by Oakland First Fridays organizers that their street festival has been cancelled for December due to rain.

Uptown-KONO: This First Friday, Oakland Art Murmur Uptown galleries along the Telegraph-Broadway corridor feature a great variety of exhibitions.  On 23rd Street, Chandra Cerrito Contemporary presents landscape photographic works in Trace: Site Works by Lewis deSoto and Sonja Hinrichsen. On 24th Street, The New Parkway Theater’s First Friday Shorts series partners with Youth UpRising for a free program of youth driven and youth produced media. 25th Street is a gallery hub with eight independent venues, from the artist-run gallery/studio of FM to Vessel Gallery, winner of Oakland Magazine’s Best Gallery 2013.  On 26th Street, Classic Cars West shows photocollages by Daniel Lippincott alongside its classic car showroom.

Downtown + Jack London + Lake Merritt: Along Downtown’s Broadway corridor, Oakland Art Murmur galleries are opening their doors for new exhibitions and special events. Betti Ono opens the debut solo exhibition of LOSTBOY, and ProArts opens Ebb / Flow, a fifteen artist group show juried by Cesar Garcia and Naima J. Keith. Just south in Jack London, LuckyLo Art Gallery + Boutique presents a new exhibit of abstract works on paper by John Wood, while Studios Eleven offers a holiday group show of its resident artists. And across Lake Merritt on Park Boulevard, Creative Framing + Gallery celebrates the opening of Animals and Nature, an exhibition of sculpture and encaustic works.

West + North Oakland: In West Oakland, at the intersection of West Street and Grand Avenue, Aggregate Space Gallery hosts the traveling collaborative work MobileInTent. And along Mandela Parkway, American Steel Studios presents a special Holiday Gift and Craft Faire, as well as hosts a California College of the Arts student exhibition ECO – ET: Integrating Art and Science. To the north, in the midst of Temescal’s First Friday festivities, Royal Nonesuch Gallery shows The Italian Navigator Has Landed in the New World, while Temescal Alley’s Interface Gallery offers a holiday print sale and fundraiser.

Many Oakland Art Murmur galleries are also open every Saturday afternoon from 1pm to 5pm, including Lake Merritt’s Backstock Gallery, Jack London’s Blackball Universe, and Jingletown’s Gray Loft Gallery.  For gallery, exhibition, and special event listings, visit OaklandArtMurmur.org.
