Oakland Art Murmur is pleased to announce the winners of this year’s Flourish Oakland Art Awards, selected by art critic and curator Jeff Kelley, from a group of 41 artworks donated to Oakland Art Murmur for the non-profit’s upcoming Flourish Oakland fundraising auction.
First place goes to Doug Garth Williams for his video Average Cats (2014, Video monitor, player, and thumb drive, 24 x 4 x 17, $1,400, courtesy of the artist and Aggregate Space, above right).
Second place goes to Stephen Whisler for his drawing Good Morning Yemen, (2013, Pastel on Paper, 15 x 19, $475, courtesy of the artist and Chandra Cerrito Contemporary, left).
Third place goes to Terry Furry for his painting Kettle, (2011, oil on birch, 18 x 24, $600, courtesy of the artist and Studios Eleven, right).
Honorable mention goes to Maya Kabat for her painting Continuous Cities 5 (2010, oil on canvas, 14 x 14, $1,200) and Patricia Thomas for her drawing Set Theory 2 (2011, charcoal on paper, 22 x 18, $900) courtesy of the artists and Slate Contemporary.
A separate Distinguished Artist Recognition was awarded to Mel Ramos for his woodcut print of Batman (2014, Woodcut with acrylic, donated by Magnolia Editions).
With the exception of Ramos’ Batman, these works and 35 others are available for sale now, at retail prices + 10%. Attendees of the Flourish Oakland gala event, being held at Classic Cars West on October 11th, will have the option of bidding on any unsold works, starting at 50% of the retail price, at prices as low as $75.
The evening will celebrate more than just visual arts, with live Jazz from The Oakland Manouche Project and cameos by Oakland Ballet dancers. Food from Michelin-star chef Daniel Patterson’s Haven and Plum Bar, as well as wood-fired organic pizzas made on-site by Fist of Flour, will highlight the culinary arts, complemented by desserts from Sweet Bar Bakery and drinks donated by Trumer Pils, Blue Moon, and Pat Paulsen Wines.
Former KPIX news anchor and artist Dana King will be the Master of Ceremonies, and over $3,000 in raffle prizes, containing gift certificates to Oakland’s top restaurants and entertainment venues, will be awarded.
Proceeds from the event will support Oakland Art Murmur’s programming which includes printed gallery guides, a website, monthly free guided gallery walking tour program, and family programming, which encourage visitors of all ages to explore Oakland’s creative culture.
